I am sure everyone knows the “Nay-Sayer”.  The person who discards your ideas, doubts other’s intentions and just knows, “that won’t work.”  This acquaintance never wants to try anything new, constantly complains and generally has a downer of an attitude.  Unlike the sabotaging friend who brings you cookies when you tell her you’ve lost ten pounds, the nay-sayer stated quite clearly in the beginning, that you would never be able to get those last ten pounds off of your butt.
As pessimists they always see the glass half-empty and exaggerate the most terrible of possible scenarios.  The smallest inconvenience becomes a horrific intrusion and they just can’t believe anything can be improved upon.  They are seemingly normal folks, but they look for the worst in every situation.  If they can hold a job, they complain about the hours, their colleagues and the benefits package.  They grumble about social events finding fault in the decorations and the food; but yet they rarely entertain in their own homes.

The nay-sayer is not a risk taker.  They don’t make final decisions, they are allusive to commitments when original thought and actions needs to take place and rarely are they confrontational.  Their cynicism is their job in society.  When something fails, they were right.  When plans don’t come together, they were right.  When you still can’t seem to lose those ten pounds, they told you so!

Someone has to play the devil’s advocate.  This permits the rest of us to think outside of the box.  Occasionally, it takes someone telling us “it can’t be done” for us to give it a try.  If it sounds like a good idea and it looks good on paper, why not at least give it a shot?  Sure, improvements and alterations may need to be made, but you gave it a whirl.

Where would we all be if the well known phrase was instead, “If at first you don’t succeed then give the hell up; I told you it wouldn’t work in the first place.”  Would we have electricity, the telephone, or the wheel?  Would we all believe the world is flat?

Don’t let your nay-sayer friend or relative get you down.  Use their negativity to your advantage.  By seeing all sides of the equation you truly can figure out E=MC2.

Market Notes

January 6, 2009

Stocks fell on Monday as investors booked profits after last week's run-up, while concerns about slowing cell phone sales hit shares of the biggest telecommunications companies. Financial stocks also slumped after Deutsche Bank cut its earnings forecast on 16 large commercial banks, including JPMorgan Chase & Co another Dow component. JPMorgan fell nearly 7 percent. The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI fell 81.80 points, or 0.91 percent, to 8,952.89. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index .SPX shed 4.35 points, or 0.47 percent, to 927.45. The Nasdaq Composite Index . slid 4.18 points, or 0.26 percent, to 1,628.03. We spent the day polling stock analysts; they all think we are in for a minor Obama rally but our technical charts don’t show it.  It’s a mixed bag folks. Think about it this way Tech company Logitech is laying off people, while the FBI initiates its largest hiring spree in its history. We're living in interesting times. Be careful, very careful.
