This first tip may not apply if you live in one of those beautiful, balmy parts of the world that never gets cold. But even here on our North Florida barrier island, it has been getting brisk in the past 2 weeks But If you do, like some of our writer/partners donw in balmy St.Martin, you can skip to Tip #2. But if you're starting to feel a nip in the air, you may want to know about those quartz infrared heaters that are being advertised all over the place? They're made by a company called EdenPURE and guess what? They WORK!!! One of my friends, who lives up in the colder climates of New England said he heats his entire 2800 square foot (poorly insulated) house with two of these heaters for about $300 in electricity. That's less than what most people I know normally pay to heat their office for one cold month. This is not one of those coil heaters. It creates a very comfortable heat that spreads throughout the room very evenly. It's much better than forced air or my old but efficient cast-iron radiators. I have no idea why this EdenPURE heater works so well, but it does and there's something very satisfying about being toasty and warm on a cold day and knowing it's not costing you and arm and a leg. Tip #2 - Save your back Are you old enough to know about back pain after a day of sitting in front of your computer? Have you spent thousands of dollars on various ergonomic chairs? And None of them work. And then one day, while I was watching a music video, I remembered that the drummer in my rock/blues band years ago set for ours on his stool, working the living daylights out of his skins and never complained about backache. I went on the Internet to find out more and searched from a drummer's stool to a doctor's stool and learned that they have better padding, they're on wheels and they rotate. They also cost a lot less." (Doctor's are cheaper than musicians I guess.) I went for a doctor's rolling stool. Cost: Less than $100. Best work chair I've ever had. Chairs with backs are great if you're sitting back smoking cigars, but if you're actually working not only don't you need a back, leaning back can mess your back up. When you get too tired to sit up straight easily, that's a clear sign you need a break. Get up, make that phone call you let go to voice mail and walk around. Tip #3 - Listen to your favorite music all the time If you like me you prefer radio stations over CDs or iPod because there's nothing like a great DJ. They can make you feel less isolated and more in tune with what's going on outside of the four walls called you office. I also like hearing knowledgeable DJs *talk* about the music they're playing. I'm kind of a music buff myself going back to the mid sixties. Of course, I can use my computer to access stations, but you can also use the Grace Wireless Internet Radio. It looks and acts exactly like a stand alone radio, but it connects to the Internet via your wireless network and let's you choose from thousands of radio stations all over the world. Cost about $150.
Another service is Pandora, which allows you to put your favorite staion type music together. No DJ's but great music. Ain't life grand...

January 6, 2009 Stocks fell on Monday as investors booked profits after last week's run-up, while concerns about slowing cell phone sales hit shares of the biggest telecommunications companies. Financial stocks also slumped after Deutsche Bank cut its earnings forecast on 16 large commercial banks, including JPMorgan Chase & Co another Dow component. JPMorgan fell nearly 7 percent. The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI fell 81.80 points, or 0.91 percent, to 8,952.89. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index .SPX shed 4.35 points, or 0.47 percent, to 927.45. The Nasdaq Composite Index . slid 4.18 points, or 0.26 percent, to 1,628.03. We spent the day polling stock analysts; they all think we are in for a minor Obama rally but our technical charts don’t show it. It’s a mixed bag folks. Think about it this way Tech company Logitech is laying off people, while the FBI initiates its largest hiring spree in its history. We're living in interesting times. Be careful, very careful. |
