The Truth About AntiOxidants PDF Print E-mail
Written by John Konhilas Ph.D.

I have been coming across more and more articles and products that promote Antioxidants. This is clearly a very hot topic especially as more data comes out linking the potential harmful effects of free radicals and reactive oxygen species, or whichever term you prefer. Through all this hype, a very important fact is left in the background. Oxygen radicals are a critical part of cell metabolism. The passing of electrons from one chemical agent to another in a series of what is called oxidation-reduction reactions generates the energetic momentum to form high-energy molecules that are used for every cellular process that requires the input of energy. As a consequence of this chain reaction, the production of free oxygen radicals is a requisite step. Every cell has many “built-in” mechanisms to deal with excessive production of these free radicals. Moreover, there is evidence building that radical formation, especially in the form of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), can act as an intracellular signaling intermediate.

On every level the US Government is on a war path to gain control over your freedom to choose. Obesity is More Hazardous Then Smoking and Drinking PDF Print E-mail
Written by John Konhilas Ph.D.

The worldwide nutritional transition to a standard “Western diet” that has occurred over the last 1-2 decades has resulted in an epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes and the myriad co-morbidities associated with those diseases such as coronary heart disease, hypertension, and cancer. It is estimated that 1 in 3 to 1 in 5 Americans are obese depending on the definition of obesity, and that over 17 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes with a rapidly rising incidence especially among the young. The recognition of obesity as a major health problem is reflected by the fact that obesity has a stronger association with chronic medical conditions, reduced quality of life, and increased health costs than smoking or drinking and that this association is similar to the impact of 20 years of aging.

Understanding the Impact of Fat on Health and Disease PDF Print E-mail

Over the last 50 years, there has been an unprecedented boom in science, technology and medicine. Yet, despite our ever-increasing knowledge of how the body works, diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, hypertension, and cancer have reached epidemic proportions especially over the last 2 decades. Many “experts” have attributed this increase to the growing population of baby boomers who have been kept alive longer because of our enhanced medical skills. However, the growth rate of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease far exceeds the growth rate of aging. The only conclusion is that we are not bringing what we learn about health and disease to clinical and practical application.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome PDF Print E-mail

Carpus is a word derived from the Greek word "karpos" which means "wrist." The wrist is surrounded by a band of fibrous tissue that normally functions as a support for the joint. The tight space between this fibrous band and the wrist bone is called the carpal tunnel. The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel to receive sensations from the thumb, index, and middle fingers of the hand. Any condition that causes swelling or a change in position of the tissue within the carpal tunnel can squeeze and irritate the median nerve. Irritation of the median nerve in this manner causes tingling and numbness of the thumb, index, and the middle fingers, a condition known as "carpal tunnel syndrome." I run into 3 people last week alone, who just underwent surgery for carpal tunnel.

Market Notes

November 20, 2008

US stocks sank and the Indexes slid to 5 year lows as banks and carmakers plunged. The fear is from the bizarre state of our financial system and not knowing what Washington is doing. Traders are saying “A hideous day..it’s hard to put a basement on this thing.”
The S&P  plunged over 6% losing 55.8 points, breaking support, closing at 815. It’s down 45% this year and poised for it’s worst year since 1931.  The Dow closed down 428 points at 7997.00 also under support.  The NASDAQ Composite dumped to1386.42 after losing 96.85 points. It would help a lot if Washington would stop the soap opera and act in a proper economic manner. Be careful
